The inside of a surgical weight loss clinic looks a great deal like a dentist’s office, or any other type of outpatient surgery center. You will find the standard medical equipment along with tool for managing common adverse events, anethesia equipment, surgical lights and masks, along with special charts for marking out and explaining the procedures that will take place. The office should be very clean and inviting, and should smell pleasant and very fresh. There should be no doubt that you are in a first class medical facility, because make no mistake: you are about to undergo a surgical weight loss procedure and it is surgery like any other.

Many people have their surgery performed on bariatric units in major hospitals, which is also an excellent option and probably the safest option on account of the extensive equipment and staff on hand at a hospital in the event that anything should go wrong during your operation. But there is also an element of special care and comfort that comes from having your surgery performed at a standalone surgical weight loss clinic.

For one thing, the staff will be used to working with people considering these procedures, and will tend to me more comfortable and knowledgable with the specific implications and applications. You will be less likely to receive funny looks or unempathic chuckles that can not only make you feel uncomfortable, but can actually have a negative impact on your surgical outcome and on your recovery time.

This is because your mind-body connection has a profound impact on the way that you physically react to surgery: if you feel tense and apprehensive about it, your tissue will be more tensile and you will bleed more. Relaxation and comfort create a situation where your tissue will react in a more easy and placid way, and you will tend to heal more quickly. This is true for weight loss surgery just as it is the case for cosmetic surgery.

Another big issue is specialization, which is a major consideration when it comes to medicine. Many of the most skilled weight loss surgeons find that they can earn more performing liposculpture surgeries in private practice than they can performing operations at a major medical center. When you have gone to school for a tremendous amount of time, sacrificed enormously, and gone far into debt to learn your craft, you can understand how it would be worth it for a surgeon to choose to practice this way. There is also less bureaucracy when working in a smaller practice.

A major deciding factor in whether you will have your surgery performed in a hospital versus a surgical weight loss clinic should be the level of trust you have in the doctor and medical staff. Often the specialists at a clinic will have more depth of experience, but the surgeons at a hospital will have a greater breadth of experience. Of course, these are gross generalizations. The best thing you can do is to talk with your primary care physician about what types of surgical options you have available to you.

Ask for referrals, opinions, and really spend some time with your doctor so that by the time you are seriously considering the issue of where to get your weight loss surgery performed, you will already know a great deal about the specific procedures, risks, and benefits.
